in 1996 to alert its industry that old assumptions about food
safety no longer were enough to protect consumers. This led
to more sophisticated industry crises response systems, but more
important an industry-wide collaboration with scientists and
several government agencies on a best-management practices system
to minimize new foodborne illness vulnerabilities.
» The California Dairy Quality Assurance Committee used
Food Foresight to convince its industry that waste management
was a survival threat. This led to collaboration with scientists
and government agencies to develop the country's first proactive
dairy waste management plan.
» The American wine industry's first strategic plan,
WineVision, (using Food Foresight data) resulted in an industry-wide
sustainability strategy. In 2002, the Wine Institute and California
Assocation of Winegrape Growers introduced The Code of Sustainable
Winegrowing Practices, a best-management system crossing every
environmental aspect of producing wine.
» Numerous promotion boards initiated strategies to build
a functional food portfolio from Food Foresight trends intelligence
presented in the mid-90s. Two groups in particular — the National
Watermelon Board and the Almond Board of California — were
among the first industries in 2003 to receive approval for health
claims.
» Dairy Council of California used Food Foresight trends
data to launch an ambitious new Internet educational initiative
that is well on its way to doubling its impact. Increased use
of Web-based programs now enable Dairy Council to customize
nutritional education to individuals through their computer.
